Imagine receiving a WhatsApp call link from a friend, opening it in your browser, and joining the conversationall without needing to download WhatsApp or create an account. This is the concept behind WhatsApp’s new "guest calling" feature, which was announced on October 14, 2026.This feature is designed to make it easier for people who do not use WhatsApp to join calls. Instead of requiring every participant to install the app, the person hosting the call can share a link that guests can use to join. This feature builds upon the existing audio and video calling capabilities already available on the web version of WhatsApp.However, there is one key distinction: while guests can join without an account, the person initiating the call must have a WhatsApp account. Guest access also includes controls that allow the host to grant entry to participants or remove them from the call.
What is WhatsApp Guest Calling?
WhatsApp Guest Calling is a feature that allows individuals without a WhatsApp account to join audio or video calls via an invitation link. This eliminates the need for guests to install the app or register an account to participate in the conversation. For example, suppose you want to have a video call with a colleague who uses a different messaging platform. Instead of asking them to download WhatsApp, you can share a "guest call" link. They can then simply open that link and follow the provided instructions to join the call. This feature is useful for professional discussions, family conversations, group meetings, and any other situation where not everyone uses the same communication app.
How does WhatsApp guest calling work?
The entire process is based on a link shared by the person hosting the call. The host initiates the call using their WhatsApp account and sends invitations to those they wish to include.Guests can open the link via a supported browser and request to join the call. They are placed in a "waiting room" until the host grants them permission to join. Once admitted, they can participate in the call and use available features such as 'raise hand,' screen sharing, and emoji reactions. The host retains control over guest access and can remove any participant if necessary. Guests cannot add others to the call, send WhatsApp messages, or view the phone numbers of other participants. These restrictions ensure that the host maintains control over the call.
Can you use WhatsApp calling without downloading the app?
Yes, the new 'guest calling' feature is designed to allow invitees to join a call without needing to install WhatsApp or create an account. However, this does not mean that all WhatsApp features are available without registration.Guest access is specifically intended for joining calls via an invitation link. Guests do not have access to a full WhatsApp account, regular chats, or the ability to initiate WhatsApp calls themselves. The host must have a WhatsApp account to initiate the call. Additionally, to join a call, a guest must have a supported device, a web browser, and an internet connection.
Is WhatsApp guest calling secure?
Whenever a call link is shared, it is crucial to keep privacy in mind. WhatsApp states that guest calls are protected by 'end-to-end encryption.' This means that conversations taking place between the participants' devices remain completely secure. This feature also includes a 'waiting room' and 'host approval' mechanism. This ensures that no one can automatically join a conversation simply by having the link; they must obtain the host's approval to join. However, users should be mindful of where they share their invitation links. If a link is sent to an unknown person, that individual could potentially request to join the call. Share links only with those you intend to invite, and grant entry only to people you know.Even with end-to-end encryption, not all privacy-related risks are entirely eliminated. Users should avoid sharing sensitive information with strangers. Furthermore, before beginning a private conversation, verify who has joined the call.
When will WhatsApp guest calling be available?
WhatsApp announced this feature on October 14, 2026. The availability of this feature may depend on the rollout process and the user's specific device or browser; therefore, it may not become available to all users at the same time..WhatsApp has also indicated that, by the end of 2026, it will integrate Google Calendar and Outlook with WhatsApp calls.
Why is this feature necessary?
People use different messaging apps for various reasons. Some use WhatsApp to communicate with family, while others rely on browser-based meeting services or other communication platforms for work. 'Guest calling' can make it easier to connect with others, as it does not require everyone to use the same app. This is particularly useful for small meetings, one-off conversations, or calls with individuals who may not wish to create a new account.
Furthermore, guest calling is not intended to replace the full range of features available with a regular WhatsApp account. Its primary purpose is to simplify the process of joining a call, rather than providing guests with the complete WhatsApp experience.
