England Cricket Board Expands Central Contracts List to 39 Players

England Cricket Board Expands Central Contracts List to 39 Players

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has expanded its men’s international contract list to 39 players for the 2026-27 season, creating a broader pool of centrally contracted and development players ahead of another demanding year of international cricket. The new list includes 30 players on Central Contracts and nine on England Development Contracts. The previous 2025-26 list had 30 contracted players in total, making the latest announcement a significant expansion of England’s player pool. The changes also highlight a shift in England’s priorities across red-ball and white-ball cricket, with several players receiving their first full contracts and others returning to the central system..

Seven Players Receive Their First Central Contracts

Seven players have been awarded Central Contracts for the first time: Tom Banton, Sam Cook, Jordan Cox, Henry Crocombe, Emilio Gay, Matthew Fisher and Dan Lawrence..

Fast bowler Ollie Robinson has also returned to the Central Contract list after previously holding a deal in 2022 and 2023. His return follows an impressive comeback to international cricket.

Robinson took 28 wickets in four Tests during England’s recent run against New Zealand and Pakistan, including two five-wicket hauls, according to Sky Sports..

Jordan Cox and Henry Crocombe Get Two-Year Deals

The ECB has also made a long-term commitment to some of its emerging players. Jordan Cox and Henry Crocombe have both received two-year Central Contracts running until 30 September 2028. Hampshire fast bowler Sonny Baker has also been upgraded to a two-year agreement. In total, 11 players have two-year Central Contracts. The group includes established names such as Joe Root, Harry Brook, Jofra Archer and Gus Atkinson, alongside younger players whom England sees as important to its future planning..

Zak Crawley Misses Out

One of the most notable omissions is opening batter Zak Crawley, whose previous contract has not been renewed. Crawley averaged 27.30 during the Ashes, according to Sky Sports, and his place at the top of the Test order has subsequently come under pressure. Emilio Gay, who has taken Crawley’s place in England’s Test plans, has now been rewarded with his first Central Contract. Left-arm seamer Luke Wood has also not received a new Central Contract. Former captain Ben Stokes and fast bowler Mark Wood are absent after their international retirements, with their previous contracts having come to an end..

England's 30 Central Contract Players

ECB confirms England men's central contracts for 2026-2027 season

The 30 players on England Men’s Central Contracts for 2026-27 are:-

Joe Root, Harry Brook, Rehan Ahmed, Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, Sonny Baker, Tom Banton, Shoaib Bashir, Jacob Bethell, Jos Buttler, Brydon Carse, Sam Cook, Jordan Cox, Henry Crocombe, Sam Curran, Liam Dawson, Ben Duckett, Emilio Gay, Matthew Fisher, Will Jacks, Dan Lawrence, Saqib Mahmood, Jamie Overton, Ollie Pope, Matthew Potts, Adil Rashid, Ollie Robinson, Phil Salt, Jamie Smith and Josh Tongue..

Nine Players Receive Development Contracts

The ECB has also awarded nine Development Contracts for the 2026-27 season. They are James Coles, Mason Crane, Josh Hull, Eddie Jack, Ben McKinney, Liam Patterson-White, Thomas Rew, Matthew Revis and Mitch Stanley.

Six of them — Coles, Crane, McKinney, Patterson-White, Rew and Revis — have received an England Development Contract for the first time. At just 18 years old, Thomas Rew is the youngest player on the overall 39-player list. He captained England’s Young Lions to the final of the ICC Under-19 World Cup earlier in 2026..

Ollie Pope and Shoaib Bashir Retain Their Places

The ECB has also chosen to retain Ollie Pope and Shoaib Bashir despite both players having faced uncertainty over their places in England’s recent Test plans. Bashir has played only two Tests in the previous year, while Pope has also spent periods outside the Test XI. Their new contracts indicate that England still sees value in keeping both players within its wider international setup..

A Wider Pool for Red-Ball and White-Ball Cricket

The ECB says its contract system considers both red-ball and white-ball cricket. Decisions are based not only on performances during the previous year but also on the likelihood of players featuring for England across formats during the coming period. That approach is increasingly important as England balances Test cricket with a crowded white-ball calendar and the growing influence of franchise leagues. The expanded list gives England more flexibility to manage workloads, develop younger players and maintain depth across different formats..

England Also Reshapes Its Coaching Structure

The contract announcement came alongside changes to England Men’s coaching structure. Stephen Fleming will lead the Test side, while Brendon McCullum continues to oversee the white-ball teams. The ECB has also created new national coaching roles, with Mike Yardy appointed Elite National Batting Lead and Richard Dawson taking the Elite National Spin Bowling Lead position. Troy Cooley continues as Elite National Pace Bowling Lead. Former South Africa international Eric Simons is also joining Fleming’s Test coaching group, while former England wicketkeeper Sarah Taylor, New Zealanders Jeetan Patel and Tim Southee, and former England batter Kevin Pietersen are part of the wider white-ball setup in different coaching or mentoring roles..

What the 39-Player List Means for England

The expanded contract system gives England a larger group of players to work with at a time when the team is preparing for several major international assignments. It also reflects a combination of experience and new talent. Root, Brook, Archer, Buttler and Rashid remain among the established names, while players such as Cox, Crocombe, Gay, Cook and Banton are being given greater long-term backing. For players like Crawley and Luke Wood, however, the new list underlines how quickly international selections can change when contracts are reviewed each season. With the Ashes and the 2027 ODI World Cup on the horizon, England's decision to widen its contract structure could prove important in building depth across formats while managing the demands of an increasingly crowded cricket calendar..
