India Women Beat Zimbabwe by Four Wickets in First T20I: Deepti Sharma and Niki Prasad Rescue India in Raipur

India Women Beat Zimbabwe by Four Wickets in First T20I: Deepti Sharma and Niki Prasad Rescue India in Raipur

India Women began their three-match T20I series against Zimbabwe with a four-wicket victory in Raipur on Friday, October 16.

The result looked far from certain when India slipped to 19/4 while chasing Zimbabwe's modest target of 115. But experienced all-rounder Deepti Sharma and debutant Niki Prasad turned the game around with a crucial partnership.

India eventually reached 116/6 in 15.4 overs, winning with 26 balls to spare and taking a 1-0 lead in the series.

The match also marked Smriti Mandhana's first game as India's full-time T20I captain, giving the victory an added significance for the Indian women's team.

After winning the toss, India elected to field first.

Zimbabwe struggled for momentum early but gradually built their innings through Kelis Ndhlovu and Sharne Mayers.

Ndhlovu scored 42 off 44 balls, while Mayers remained unbeaten on 43 off 33 balls, including four boundaries and two sixes.

Their contributions helped Zimbabwe reach 114/5 in 20 overs.

For India, Nandani Sharma was the leading wicket-taker with 2/11, while Sree Charani, Arundhati Reddy and Kranti Gaud picked up one wicket each.

On paper, 115 looked like a manageable target for India. The chase, however, quickly became a test of character.

India's chase began disastrously.

Captain Smriti Mandhana, Shafali Verma and Anushka Sharma were among the early wickets, while Harmanpreet Kaur also departed cheaply.

Within the first few overs, India had fallen to 19/4, putting Zimbabwe in a strong position.

Zimbabwe's Nyasha Gwanzura was particularly effective with the ball. She finished with 3/18, putting significant pressure on India's top order.

At that point, India needed composure more than aggression.

And that is exactly what Deepti Sharma and Niki Prasad provided.

Coming into a difficult situation, Deepti Sharma played the role of the experienced campaigner.

She combined controlled strokeplay with smart shot selection and gradually shifted the momentum back towards India.

Deepti scored 49 runs from 37 deliveries, narrowly missing a half-century but playing perhaps the most important innings of the match.

Her partnership with Niki Prasad became the turning point of the chase.

Niki Prasad Makes a Memorable International Debut

For Niki Prasad, this was a debut to remember.

The young batter walked in when India were under serious pressure, but instead of allowing the situation to dictate her approach, she settled in alongside Deepti.

Niki remained unbeaten on 39 from 35 balls, showing patience and composure as the partnership took India closer to victory.

The pair added 82 runs, transforming India's position from 19/4 to a winning situation.

For Niki, the performance was particularly notable given that she was making her senior international debut. She had previously captained India to the ICC Under-19 Women's T20 World Cup title in 2025.

Once Deepti and Niki had stabilised the innings, the required target became increasingly comfortable.

India eventually reached 116/6 in 15.4 overs, winning by four wickets.

Niki's unbeaten 39 ensured she was at the crease when the winning runs were scored, while Deepti's 49 laid the foundation for the successful recovery.

The victory also extended India's winning run to six consecutive matches, according to Akashvani's report.

Smriti Mandhana Begins Captaincy Tenure With a Win

The match was also the beginning of a new leadership phase for Indian women's cricket.

Smriti Mandhana took over as India's full-time T20I captain from Harmanpreet Kaur.

A captain's first match can bring its own pressure, particularly when the team loses four early wickets in a relatively small chase.

But India's recovery ensured Mandhana's captaincy tenure began with a win.

The result also gives India a 1-0 advantage in the three-match series.

A Tough Start, Then a Calm Finish

What made the match interesting was the contrast between India's two innings phases.

With the ball, India kept Zimbabwe to just 114 despite Mayers and Ndhlovu putting together useful contributions.

With the bat, however, India found themselves in trouble almost immediately.

The recovery showed why T20 cricket is not always about how quickly a team starts. Sometimes, the ability to absorb pressure and rebuild can be just as important.

Deepti provided the experience, while Niki provided the composure of a player who looked comfortable despite the circumstances.

What's Next for India Women?

The second T20I between India and Zimbabwe is scheduled for October 18 in Raipur, with the third match to follow on October 20.

India will enter the second match with a 1-0 lead and an opportunity to seal the series.

For Zimbabwe, the challenge will be to turn their promising performance with the ball into a more complete team effort.

The series is also an important opportunity for players such as Niki Prasad to establish themselves at the international level.
