India vs West Indies 5th T20I: Rain Washes Out Decider as Series Ends 2-2

India vs West Indies 5th T20I: Rain Washes Out Decider as Series Ends 2-2

The much-awaited decider between India and West Indies ended without a result as persistent rain forced the fifth and final T20I to be abandoned at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on October 17.

With both teams having won two matches each in the five-game series, the washout meant India and West Indies shared the series 2-2.

The result brought an anticlimactic end to a closely contested T20I series, with West Indies once again showing that they could challenge India in the shortest format.

Rain Delays Start and Reduces Match to Nine Overs

The match was initially delayed by rain, with the start pushed back by more than two hours.

When conditions eventually improved, the contest was reduced to nine overs per side. West Indies captain Shai Hope won the toss and chose to field first.

India's innings began aggressively, but the weather remained a constant threat. The hosts managed to score at a rapid pace before another spell of rain brought the game to an early end.

India scored 118 runs for five wickets in 7.4 overs before rain once again stopped play.

The innings featured several quick-fire contributions. Ishan Kishan smashed 30 runs from just 10 balls, providing India with an explosive start.

Captain Shreyas Iyer scored 22 off 14 deliveries, while Naman Dhir produced a late burst with an unbeaten 24 from only six balls.

Naman's innings included three sixes and a four, giving the home crowd a brief glimpse of the high-scoring contest they had expected.

West Indies Never Got a Chance to Bat

The West Indies innings never began.

After India reached 118/5, the rain returned and conditions failed to improve sufficiently for the visitors to start their chase.

With the remaining time and weather conditions making a shortened chase increasingly difficult, the umpires eventually abandoned the match.

As a result, the fifth T20I was officially recorded as a no result, rather than a win for either side.

Shai Hope Named Player of the Series

Despite the series ending without a winner, West Indies captain Shai Hope finished as one of the standout performers.

Hope was named Player of the Series after an outstanding batting campaign. He scored 261 runs across four innings, averaging 130.5, and played a major role in keeping West Indies competitive throughout the series.

His performances underlined the growing competitiveness of the West Indies side and ensured that India could not turn the series into another comfortable home success.

India Remain Unbeaten in Home Bilateral T20I Series

India's batting misfires again as England take series in quick time

Although India could not win the series, the 2-2 result extended an important home record.

India remain unbeaten in a bilateral T20I series at home since 2019. West Indies, meanwhile, will have to wait longer for their first bilateral T20I series victory in India since 2002.

For India captain Shreyas Iyer, the series offered both positives and areas for improvement. He highlighted the team's batting performances and ability to bounce back, while also acknowledging inconsistency in execution, particularly with the ball.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar's Return Delayed by Rain

The fifth T20I also carried additional interest because veteran fast bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar returned to India's T20I setup.

The Bengaluru match was his first international appearance in almost four years, but rain meant he never got the opportunity to bowl.

India had also made changes to their playing combination for the decider, but the weather ultimately prevented the match from developing into a full contest.

A Frustrating End to a Competitive Series

The Bengaluru washout was disappointing for both teams and especially for the crowd at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, which had waited through the long rain delay hoping to see a proper series decider.

Instead, the fans witnessed only a short burst of aggressive batting before the weather intervened again.

The 2-2 result means neither side could claim overall dominance, with the series ending exactly level.

For India, attention now turns to the upcoming tour of New Zealand, while West Indies can take confidence from their competitive performances against the reigning T20 World Cup champions.
