India Tech Jobs 2026: 1.23 Lakh Openings, AI Skills in Demand

India Tech Jobs 2026: 1.23 Lakh Openings, AI Skills in Demand

India's technology job market is showing signs of a strong recovery. Active technology job openings in the country have reached around 1.23 lakh in October 2026, the highest level in 18 months..According to staffing firm Xpheno's latest Active Tech Jobs Outlook, technology hiring demand has increased 17% compared with October 2025 and 5% compared with the previous month.

For job seekers, the bigger question is not just how many openings are available, but which skills and roles companies are currently looking for.

IT Services Driving the Recovery

IT services companies are playing the biggest role in the latest hiring recovery.

The segment has around 66,000 active openings, up 57% from the same period last year and 16% from September..The increase is being linked particularly to demand for areas such as AI engineering, analyst roles and technical leadership..This suggests that companies are not simply increasing headcount across every technology role. They are increasingly looking for professionals who can work with newer technologies and solve business problems using digital tools.

AI Skills Are Becoming More Important

Artificial intelligence continues to influence the type of talent companies want to hire.

AI engineering is among the areas seeing stronger demand, while analyst and technical leadership positions are also gaining attention..For job seekers, this means traditional technical knowledge alone may not always be enough. Skills related to AI, data, cloud, cybersecurity and automation can make candidates more relevant for changing technology roles. However, candidates should avoid learning every new technology at once. Building strong fundamentals and then adding specialised skills can be a more practical approach.

Experienced Professionals Are Getting a Larger Share

One of the most important points in the latest data is that the recovery is not equally distributed across experience levels..Around 68,000 openings, or 55% of active tech demand, are for mid-senior professionals. This means experienced professionals are currently benefiting significantly from the recovery. For freshers, this does not mean there are no opportunities. Instead, it highlights the importance of internships, practical projects, certifications and demonstrable skills when competing for entry-level positions.

Work From Office Is Making a Comeback

Another major change is the working model..Around 81% of active technology openings are work-from-office roles, while remote and hybrid opportunities have a smaller share of the market..This is important for job seekers who are looking exclusively for work-from-home positions.Candidates who are open to relocating or working from an office may have access to a much larger pool of opportunities..

Bengaluru Still Leads Tech Hiring

India's major technology hubs continue to dominate hiring..Bengaluru remains one of the biggest technology employment markets, while Hyderabad, Chennai and other major cities also continue to attract technology employers..At the same time, hiring is gradually spreading beyond the traditional metros, with Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities gaining importance in India's technology talent market. This could create more opportunities for professionals who do not want to move to the biggest technology hubs..

What Skills Should Job Seekers Focus On?

The latest hiring pattern suggests that candidates should focus on skills that have direct business and technology applications.

Some areas worth exploring include:-

  • Artificial intelligence and machine learning
  • Data analytics
  • Cloud computing
  • Cybersecurity
  • Software engineering
  • Automation
  • Technical project management
  • Business and technology analysis

Communication and problem-solving skills also remain important, particularly for analyst, consulting, sales and leadership-oriented technology roles..

Does This Mean the IT Job Crisis Is Over?

Not completely. The latest numbers show a clear improvement in active hiring demand, but they should not be interpreted as a guarantee that every technology professional will find a job quickly..The market is becoming more selective. Companies are increasingly looking for specific skills and experienced talent rather than hiring in large numbers across every role...The figure of 1.23 lakh represents active job openings, not 1.23 lakh people already hired..For candidates, the recovery is therefore positive—but the competition for relevant roles can remain high.

What Should Job Seekers Do Now?

If you are planning to switch jobs or enter the technology sector, this could be a good time to update your resume and start applying selectively..Instead of sending the same resume everywhere, match your CV with the job description and highlight the skills that the employer is actually seeking..Candidates should also maintain an updated LinkedIn profile, build practical projects and keep track of openings across company career pages and reliable job portals..
