Delhi's Forgotten 1,100 year old dam: The story od Anangpur

Just a few km from surajkung in Faridabad stands an old stone structure that many people in delhi ncr have never heard about. it is known as Anangpur Dam, and its story goes back to the time of the tomar rulers.

Today it may look like forgotten stone wall surrounded by the aravali hills but centuries ago, this structure served an important purpose, collection and managing water in a region where every drop mattered.

Built during the tomar period

Anangpur Dam is traditionally associated with anangpal of the tomar dynasty. Historical records and government heritage documents attribute its construction to the 11th century. The Tomars were amoung the early ruling dynasties associated with the delhi region. Anangpal || is particularly remembered for his connection with early delhi and the construction of Lal Kot, an important early fortification in the city. Anangpur was also an important for people living in the area.

What makes this Dam special?

According to the archaeological survey of india's monument record, thee structure is approximately 101.2m long its width is about 19.8m at the top and increases to more than 27m at the base.

The dam has 7 drainage channels running through its structure. These openings were designed to help control the water level rather than allowing water to collect without regulation. Stone steps can also be seen on its western side. The structure was built using stone blocks. It was not simply a wall built across a stream. it was a planned water management structure designed around the natural landscape.

How did it help people?

The Aravali region does'nt have the same water availability. So storing rainwater was essential for farming or everyday needs. Dam helped retain rainwater, which could be used for requirements. Historical accounts and local memories also connect the Dam with the Water need of nearby settlements. Its location near Surajkund is another interesting details. Both structures reflect the importance of water storage in the early history of this region .

A forgotten heritage site near Delhi

Now dan is protected monument under the government of india. despite its historical importance, it does not receive the same attention as Delhi's famous forts, tombs and monuments. The surrounding Anangpur area also contains remains linked to the early medieval period.
